AP US Government Summer Assignment

AP GOVERNMENT 2014-2015
Mrs. Van Dyke
AP U.S. GOVERNMENT SUMMER 2014 ASSIGNMENT

Students in the upcoming course are to do the following:

  1. Read the U.S. Constitution and create for yourself a basic understanding of the document that contains the guiding principles of American self-rule. Make sure this is entirely complete. Use this website for the assignment: http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution.html
  1. Read the following book, and complete the accompanying study guide.

Game Change
Authors:  John Heilemann and Mark Halperin
ISBN:  9780061733642

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime (2009), by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, is the story of the 2008 presidential election. Game Change was made into a film, do NOT watch the film instead, the book is MUCH more comprehensive and interesting.  In 2008, the presidential election became blockbuster entertainment. Everyone was watching as the race for the White House unfolded like something from the realm of fiction. The meteoric rise and historic triumph of Barack Obama. The shocking fall of the House of Clinton—and the improbable resurrection of Hillary as Obama's partner and America's face to the world. The mercurial performance of John McCain and the mesmerizing emergence of Sarah Palin. Based on hundreds of interviews with the people who lived the story, Game Change is a reportorial tour de force that reads like a fast-paced novel. Character driven and dialogue rich, replete with extravagantly detailed scenes, this is the occasionally shocking, often hilarious, ultimately definitive account of the campaign of a 2008.

Summer School 2014

Summer School Sign Up!  If you need to attend summer school please visit http://tinyurl.com/moqewyb and complete the registration form.  Students can only take ONE course in summer school.  Due to promotion requirements, English courses are first priority.  However, courses in Math, History and Science will be offered.
Summer School dates are June 16-June 27.  Students must attend each day beginning at 7:30am and ending at 2:15pm.  Forms are also located in the MHS main office and counseling office.

ATTENDANCE & TARDIES - Attendance during Summer School 2014 is very important. One day of
summer is school is equal to approximately one week of regular school. Parents are asked not to make summer
vacation plans which conflict with summer school dates. -Students who are absent more than ONE (1) day,
EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, will be withdrawn from summer school. -Three tardies or three early dismissals
will be counted as one absence, regardless of the amount of time involved. -30 minutes tardy will equal one
absence. -There can be NO EXCEPTIONS to the attendance requirement.
MAKE-UP WORK - Make-up work applies ONLY to EXCUSED absences. There is no opportunity to make
up work beyond one day, because if a student misses more than one day, excused or unexcused, he/she will be
withdrawn. -In order to be able to make up work, students must bring a valid note signed by a parent or
guardian stating the reason for absence.
EXAMS - Students will not be allowed to take exams early or to make up exams after the exam period. Exams
are given on the last two days of the course.
DISCIPLINE - Summer School 2014 is a privilege, not a requirement. There is much to be done in a
compressed time frame and, therefore, little time for behavior problems. -Students referred to the summer
administrator for violations of discipline may be withdrawn from summer school on the first referral. -Copies of
the Summer School 2014 Discipline Regulations will be distributed on the first day of the summer session to be
signed by both the student and a parent or guardian and returned to the school.
COST - Summer School is offered free of charge to Mooresville High School students.
TRANSPORTATION - Bus transportation will be provided upon request Please indicate whether or not you
need bus transportation on the online Summer School registration form.
If you have any questions regarding Summer School, please contact Chris Gammon, Assistant Principal, or your
child’s designated guidance counselor.
