MHS Yearbook Wins Awards

Mooresville High School yearbook staff earns state, national honors

Mooresville, N.C. (Sept. 4, 2014) – The staff of The Pitchfork yearbook at Mooresville High School in Mooresville, N.C., has been honored with awards from the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) and the school’s yearbook publisher, Walsworth Yearbooks.

Competing in the Large School category in NCSMA’s annual awards this summer, The Pitchfork earned an Overall Honors designation and third place in Cover Design. Students Ally Grogan and Tosh Torrence won in the Featured Spread Design category.

While awaiting the NCSMA results for its 2014 yearbook, the 2015 staff was earning recognition at the annual Camp Carolina summer yearbook workshop in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Elena Nowak won first place for Best Advertising Plan and Best Overall Marketing Plan; Zoe Hambley won second place in the Advanced Design Class; and Anna Lowrance won first place in the Yearbook 101 InDesign class. The staff won first place for the People’s Showcase.

Nationally, the 2014 Pitchfork was inducted into Walsworth Yearbooks' Gallery of Excellence. Books included in the Gallery of Excellence represent a small percentage of all yearbooks published by Walsworth, and recognizes them for exemplifying excellence in yearbook creation.

The Pitchfork, along with other Gallery of Excellence yearbooks, will be seen by yearbook staffs across the country. It will be loaned to schools as an idea generator and displayed at regional, state and national conventions and workshops.

The 2014 edition of The Pitchfork yearbook was produced under the direction of Tiffany Cavicchia, first year yearbook adviser and new to MHS.

Mooresville students will also be wowed by the the 2014 Pitchfork. The yearbook features a custom animation that is embedded in the cover, which can be seen by students when they download the Aurasma mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. Once the app is installed, users can open it on their smartphone or tablet and launch the viewfinder. When the viewfinder is held over any linked image, such as a yearbook cover, the animation begins to play.

The Pitchfork cover animation spins into a window that opens and shows video clips of activities that occurred at the school during the year while an accompanying music soundtrack plays. Ten videos located in the contents of the book also can be seen using the Aurasma app.

As part of the Partners in Education partnership between Walsworth Yearbooks and Aurasma, Walsworth helps schools set up their Aurasma channel, provides training to yearbook staffs to use the technology and works with the school to create custom animations. Walsworth entered into a partnership with Aurasma to assist schools in creating augmented reality for their yearbooks, bringing yearbooks to life with 3D animation, video and special effects to give readers a unique experience in the printed book.
